Setting up a business in Hong Kong: the five steps, and the office decision most people get wrong

Setting up a business in Hong Kong takes five things, in this order: incorporate the company, appoint a company secretary, hold a registered office address in Hong Kong, complete business registration with the Inland Revenue Department, and open a corporate bank account. 1. Incorporate the company

Hong Kong allows 100% foreign ownership and non-resident directors. You need a name, directors, shareholders and the articles.

2. Appoint a company secretary

Required from day one: a Hong Kong resident individual, or a body corporate with a registered office in Hong Kong.

3. Hold a registered office address

A legal requirement, and a PO box does not qualify. It must be a real Hong Kong address that can receive official notices.

4. Complete business registration

With the Inland Revenue Department, to obtain the Business Registration Certificate.

5. Open a corporate bank account

Allow the most time for this one. Hong Kong banks run heavy due diligence, and your registered address is part of what they assess.
