Who Hq Are

HQ grew out of the American executive suite business, which was renting furnished offices by the month decades before anyone used the phrase coworking space. It has been run by IWG since 2004.

IWG is the group behind Regus, and it covers more than 4,000 locations in 120 countries. HQ is the part of that group built for small teams and straightforward requirements, in buildings a street or two off the prime corners. The reception, the internet, the cleaning and the contract are run to the group's standard.

For a tenant, that means the network comes with the office. An HQ agreement is an IWG agreement. You can use the business lounges across that network, in 120 countries, without paying again. A two person company in Cheung Sha Wan still has a place to sit in Tokyo, Bangkok or Frankfurt.

Where They Are In Hong Kong

Eight centres across seven districts: Sheung Wan, Central, Causeway Bay, Quarry Bay, Mong Kok, Cheung Sha Wan and Kowloon Bay. Central has two and the other six districts have one each. Five are on Hong Kong Island and three in Kowloon.

The Leighton Centre office is three minutes from Causeway Bay station, on Leighton Road. HQ opened it in July 2023 with up to 15,000 square feet, meeting rooms, an event space and two outdoor balconies. Outdoor space of any kind is rare in a Causeway Bay office.

Pioneer Centre in Mong Kok is two minutes from Prince Edward station, Exit B1. The building went up in 1995 and runs to 25 storeys, with fifteen office floors and six passenger lifts. Underneath it is a shopping centre of about 200 shops.

In Central, Wilson House stands at 19 Wyndham Street, ten minutes uphill from Central station Exit D1. It is a 23 storey building with small floors that suit firms of a few people. The Voeux is on Des Voeux Road Central, five minutes from Hong Kong station and the Airport Express.

On the western edge of Sheung Wan, Nam Wo Hong Building sits on Wing Lok Street, five minutes from Sheung Wan station. K11 Atelier in Quarry Bay opened in August 2023, runs to about 22,000 square feet and is six minutes from Quarry Bay station.

Two Kowloon addresses complete the list. Trade Square in Cheung Sha Wan is five minutes from Cheung Sha Wan station, Exit B. Its office floors run above 40,000 square feet, so a team that needs room to spread out has space for it. The Kowloon Bay centre is a ten minute walk from Kowloon Bay station.

What The Spaces Are Like

Each centre has a staffed reception and a corridor of glass-fronted private rooms. Inside a room you get a table, chairs that adjust, power, storage and a door that locks. The look is plain and businesslike.

Every centre comes with furniture, internet, utilities, cleaning, 24 hour access and the staffed reception. HQ says its centres are monitored by CCTV around the clock.

Three things HQ does unusually well:

**An event space and two balconies at Leighton Centre.** You can run a launch, a training day or a company meeting without hiring a venue across town, three minutes from Causeway Bay station. The space is shared with other members.

**A route from one person to a private room, in one building.** Five of the eight centres sell space on a coworking floor as well as private rooms. A company can start on the shared floor at two people and take a room at five, without changing address, post or company registration.

**Centres in residential districts.** Cheung Sha Wan, Kowloon Bay, Mong Kok and Quarry Bay are close to where many people live, in Kowloon and the east of the island. For a team whose customers never visit, that shortens the commute.

What Hq Costs

A seat in a private office starts at HK$2,400 a month, at Nam Wo Hong Building in Sheung Wan. The highest opening price is HK$4,100, at Leighton Centre in Causeway Bay. In both, the reception, the internet and the contract are the same. The district and the building are what change.

A room for four runs from HK$6,920 at Trade Square in Cheung Sha Wan to HK$14,000 at Pioneer Centre in Mong Kok.

Coworking space is sold at five of the eight centres:

The other three centres, in Central, Cheung Sha Wan and Kowloon Bay, sell private rooms only.

Meeting rooms are booked by the hour and charged separately from the rent, at HQ centres and across the wider network.

The shortest term is three months. The deposit is two months and the notice period is three months. Rooms come furnished and serviced.

Who Hq Suits

HQ suits small teams that want a private, serviced office in a well-connected building. The eight centres differ a good deal from each other.

That is a wide group. Startups, family businesses, consultancies, online traders, branch offices and back-office teams, from one person up to twelve or more. What they have in common is wanting the office to be simple: a door that locks, someone at reception, and one bill that covers everything.

It also suits companies whose customers rarely visit. The money then goes into the space and the commute rather than into the postcode. When a client does want to meet, the network gives you a room to borrow in Central or abroad. It also suits a business that is growing but cannot yet say how fast. You begin on a coworking floor and move into a room in the same centre.
