Who Metro Workspace Are

Metro Workspace opened in Hong Kong in 2015 and calls itself one of the city's early coworking space operators.

It now runs eight centres: six in Hong Kong and two in Seoul, at Yeonmujang and Seongsuil-ro. Hong Kong is the home market and the larger of the two.

For a tenant, that means a small operator that knows this city rather than a template imported from elsewhere. Every centre was designed one at a time, and one membership gets you into all six.

Where They Are In Hong Kong

Six buildings across five districts, and two of them are places most operators skip.

Two are in Central, 300 metres apart. World Trust Tower is a 23 storey tower from 1994, at 50 Stanley Street on the corner of Pottinger Street. It is three minutes from Central station Exit D2. Silver Fortune Plaza is 24 storeys at 1 Wellington Street, where Wellington meets Wyndham Street, five minutes from Exit D1.

The Admiralty centre is on the sixth floor of Admiralty Centre Tower 1, 18 Harcourt Road. It is two minutes from the station by Exit C2. Admiralty now joins four MTR lines: the Tsuen Wan, Island, South Island and East Rail. That makes it the easiest of the six to reach from anywhere in the city.

Tin Hau is at Sea View Estate on Watson Road, four minutes from Fortress Hill station. The building dates from 1966, and the streets around it are full of design studios, fashion showrooms and architects' offices.

The last two are in districts with very little flexible office space. Wong Chuk Hang sits on the ninth floor of Remex Centre, a 1978 industrial building at 42 Wong Chuk Hang Road. It is across the road from the station on the South Island line. Yuen Long is on the tenth floor of The Rainbow, 22 Wang Yip Street South, four minutes from Long Ping. Very few operators run anything at all in Yuen Long.

What The Spaces Are Like

Each building has its own design. Admiralty is The Golden Boy: gold metal framing for a 1920s glow, green planted walls and a swing. Wong Chuk Hang is The Urban Woods, more than 10,000 square feet of wood and high ceilings, with an outdoor balcony. World Trust Tower is Cafe Le Louvre, with a lobby copying the Paris museum and reproductions of its paintings in the rooms. Silver Fortune Plaza is Despacito, white and blue and Iberian, with a full kitchen used for events. Tin Hau is Black and White, monochrome furniture under a neon sign. Yuen Long is Always On My Mind: dark green doors, red pendant lights, paintings of old Yuen Long by local artists, and a rooftop of more than 2,000 square feet.

Every centre comes with 24 hour access, furnished rooms, utilities, cleaning, a reception, a pantry with free coffee and tea, lockable private offices and meeting rooms booked through a mobile app. One membership covers all six Hong Kong buildings, so you can work from Central in the morning and Wong Chuk Hang in the afternoon.

Metro Workspace is very good at providing:

**A separate network for each private office.** Internet is 1 Gbps on redundant fibre. Every private office sits on its own segregated network rather than on the open one. For a company that handles client data, that is the difference between a shared office and a private one.

**A room you would choose on how it looks.** Six buildings, six designs, each priced on its own. You are not picking a district and taking whatever the house style gives you.

**Dogs and cats at work.** Metro Workspace is pet friendly and runs pet events with a Hong Kong pet media brand. Very little office space in Hong Kong allows animals.

What Metro Workspace Costs

A seat in a private office starts at HK$2,450 a month at Remex Centre in Wong Chuk Hang. The Rainbow in Yuen Long asks the same HK$2,450. The highest opening price is HK$4,740, at World Trust Tower in Central.

A room for four runs from HK$9,000 at Sea View Estate in Tin Hau to HK$15,800 at World Trust Tower in Central.

Coworking space is sold at four of the six centres, priced per person per month:

The other two centres, Tin Hau and Yuen Long, sell private rooms only.

Meeting room time comes as credits included in the plan, rather than as an hourly bill. How many credits you get depends on the plan you take.

The minimum term is three months. The deposit is two months and the notice period is three months. That is a long way short of the three year lease a conventional Hong Kong office needs.

Who Metro Workspace Suits

Metro Workspace suits small teams who care what the room looks like. The six centres are very different from each other.

That covers a lot of people. One to six person firms, people working for themselves, satellite offices of overseas companies, and anyone who wants a private room rather than a seat on an open floor. Members already there work in marketing, finance, insurance, recruitment, fashion and IT.

It also suits companies whose staff do not live near Central. Wong Chuk Hang is two minutes from the South Island line and Yuen Long is four minutes from the Tuen Ma line. Both open at HK$2,450 a month for a space for one person in a private office. Almost no operator runs anything in either place.
